Mid Year Progress Report

It's that time in the corporate reporting cycle, so we are now in possession of Nancy's mid year progress report - which in old money would be a school report - but given the ever more insidious encroachment of corporate nonsense into the marrow of our world such things are unavoidable.

Ignoring this pish, however, what did the q4 report say? Is she a going concern? A good question. As is becoming tradition I've copied out her report verbatim for your reading pleasure.

The first section is given over to Nancy where she has been asked to reflect on her performance over the course of the last financial year and whether her performance has met the necessary benchmarks set by senior management.

This year I have learnt:
Dividing. Timesing, Spelling, Joined up Hand writing, rainforest and Victorians.
We went on lots of trips which were fun like Wigmore Hall the natural history museum and the zoo.

Now I need to:
Learn by 6,8,9,10,11,12 times tables
practice my spellings
argue with my friends less
do more home work
working on my end game

Now I want to
get better at mathematics
be able to do the monkey bars
perfect the Sicilian defense

And now we get into her teacher's reflections on her performance.

Reading - Achievement Above, Effort Above
Nancy is an extremely competent reader. She reads with expression and fluency, although her insistent on giving characters questionable national accents can be unsettling, and will always volunteer to read to class. She is able to make inferences and predictions based on what she has read, and is able to give thorough written answers to longer questions using the "point, evidence, explain" but still struggles to understand synecdoche and metonymy. Nancy has a fantastic acquistion of language and is always keen to share her insights with the class.

Writing - Achievement Above, Effort Excellent
Nancy has a firm understanding of all of the genres we have written in so far in year three and has shown a real passion for autofiction to help explore her views of the world. She consistently produces exemplar pieces of work. She enjoys writing and takes meticulous care and consideration over what she produces. Nancy always uses the resources available to her to improve her work and has a small group of peers which she uses to bounce ideas off.

[How you can help at home? Help Nancy to acquire a wide vocabulary, and continue to support her in whichever way you currently have been as it is most certainly working!]

Maths - Achievement At, Effort Excellent
Nancy has become much more engaged with Maths No Problem as the year progressed. She was initially reluctant to try and solve problems independently, or say she didn't understand/was stuck without sufficient effort. Occasionally her exclamations of "Oh Bother" can be distracting but as the year has moved on, Nancy engages well and is a leader in her group, can demonstrate her reasoning in several ways and is much more confident and enjoying maths lessons.

Topic Work
Nancy has engaged well with all of our topics this year and quite often has quite a vast prior knowledge of what we are studying. I am aware that she will go home and discuss or further research what we are going in school, which demonstrates her real zest for learning but she must also recognise that regardless of any additional research she might have undertaken the teachers must teach from the curriculum. So far this year we have studied healthy lifetstyles, nutrition, teeth, rocks and plants in science. In topiic we have studied the rainforest, David Attenborough, dinosaurs, the Victorians and the Titanic.

Summary Comments
Nancy is an absolute pleasure to have in class. She is mature, friendly, inquisitive, and supportive - all of the aspects which make her an exemplary role model in class. She tries her best in everything that she does and has such a charming personality. I would just like to see Nancy be more resilient if she is struggling with something - she can become sulky, and occasionally resort to some rather anglo-saxon English rather than try to address the difficulty.

  1. This is encouraging but you're right: how much value is Nancy adding? If that's not growing by app. 12% y-o-y, she needs to be wrapped up with another profit centre. And I don't think Esterhazy is viable as a profit centre.
