Clean as a whistle
Nancy is lovely. But a chatty one, of that there is no doubt. She and her best friend have been separated for chatting too much at school and conversations at home can get increasingly silly. Take for example this conversation between Nancy and Maddy:
Maddy: Tonight we are going to clean and tidy the whole house.
Nancy: Not in there [the living room],it is already clean as a whistle.
Maddy: Really, how come?
Nancy: Daddy said we had to tidy up before Mummy came home, so I did all of that and Daddy did nothing at all.
Suffice it to say I had done plenty whilst she slaved in the sitting room, baking a cake and looking after Estonia. But that didn't bother old Nancy.
She feels increasingly old, her verbal dexterity combined with her ability to sulk can make it feel like we've a miniature teenager in the house. Albeit one who isn't inhibited about farting, which she is the master of. Her comic timing would put Hale and Pace to shame. And now it is starting pay dividends - tonight she cooked her parents dinner - in a grim parody of North London she made us polenta crusted fish cakes. Hero Nancy.
Aside from moments of teenage grimness, she is largely joyous and despite the odd bout of silliness, remains enraptured by school and by her sister.
Lovely.
